Anyone else plan to do things weeks in advance all to end up waiting until the last minute…
I had planned a while ago to make my mother-in-law a bathtub tray as a housewarming gift, but I never got around to it and now the house is done.
Luckily I was able to grab a board, some of my favorite WORKPRO Tools, and get the entire project done in one day!
This super simple homemade gift idea is perfect for anyone on your list (especially yourself 😉).
Plus it only took one board to create so it’s a super budget friendly idea.
Let me show you how to whip up your own bathtub tray!
DIY Bath Tray

Supplies:
Making the Cuts

Start by measuring the width of the bathtub, outside edge to outside edge.
Once you have that measurement, mark and cut the common board to that length plus 1 inch.

From the leftover board cut one piece at 1-1/2 inches wide & one piece at 10 inches wide.
On one side of the 10 inch piece cut a slight angle, this piece will be the book stand.
Before you assemble the pieces sand the boards smooth with 220 grit sandpaper.
Assembling the Bathtub Tray

Next, measure and mark the center of the bath tray along the long side, this is where the book stand will go.
Before attaching the pieces, pre-drill two holes where the book stand will be attached.

Use glue and 1-1/2 inch screws to attach the book stand to the tray.

Now that the stand part is attached, add the small book stop 2-3 inches in front of it using glue.

Finishing The Bathtub Tray
After the glue dried completely I started staining the tray in Hickory stain.

Once the stain dried I added two layers of sealer to the bathtub tray to protect it from water and humidity.

After everything was dry I started to work on the handles.

I really liked the shape of these silver ones but thought they would look even better with a little Rub N Buff!

To attach the handles, first measure and mark the center of the board.

Set the depth of the handles, I used the width of the ruler to make it easy.

Once I had the placement of the handles marked, I predrilled small holes to keep the board from cracking.

Finally I attached the handles with small screws!
